So, you've decided it's time to buy a suppressor. Whether it's your first time buying a suppressor ever or just your first time buying one online, the process on our end is fairly similar to buying a firearm, the biggest difference being what to do when your new suppressor arrives at your FFL.
Note about the 2026 NFA tax stamp changes: On January 1, 2026, the tax portion of the NFA is changing to $0, all requirements of the NFA will still be in effect. Only the dollar amount of the tax stamp is changing.
CMMG is proud to offer a range of centerfire and rimfire suppressors that fit almost any need. Once you've decided which ZEROED suppressor is right for you there is one other thing you should do before you add it to your cart and checkout.
To complete NFA item transfers, a dealer must have both their FFL (federal firearms license) and SOT (special occupational taxpayer status). If you don’t have an FFL you’ve used in the past, use our Dealer Locator or search online to find a gun shop or dealer in your area. Make sure you call them and ask if they are licensed to facilitate and are currently accepting suppressor transfers. This is also a good opportunity to ask what the transfer fee is as this varies from dealer to dealer.
A transfer fee is a nominal fee every dealer charges to handle the administrative work with ATF processes, paperwork, and facilitating the transfer to you.
Once you have found a local dealer and confirmed they are accepting suppressor transfers, go ahead and buy that can! When you get to the checkout page you will be prompted to select your FFL. If you don’t see the FFL you want to use you can contact our customer service team at customerservice@cmmg.com to have them added to our FFL selector.
After your suppressor arrives at the FFL you will have to coordinate with them to complete your ATF Form 4, this is the application for the NFA item tax stamp. There are multiple ways the Form 4 can be completed, via paper forms or through ATF e-forms. E-forms will process much faster on average than submitting a hard copy Form 4.
In addition to the standard personal info and identification requirements on a standard 4473 background check, you will also need to submit:
NOTE: Some FFLs or FFLs with Silencer Shop kiosks may automatically send a copy of your Form 4 to your CLEO. Verify with your local FFL if you must send or if they will on your behalf.
Once these steps are completed your FFL will have to retain possession of the suppressor until the Form 4 is approved and your tax stamp has been issued.
Wait times can vary depending on a number of factors, the average wait time for eForm 4 in 2025 was 5 days on average with most waiting times between 1 and 30 days. Wait times are expected to increase with the $0 tax stamp in 2026, but no estimates for the exact wait times are available yet.
Once you receive notice from the ATF or your FFL that your tax stamp has been approved, you can go back and pick up your new suppressor!
